At an eager age of 18, I moved to New York City and as most style-obsessed do, studied fashion design. Throughout the years, I’ve seen trends come and go and I’ve undoubtedly worn some regrettable pieces (honestly, whohasn’t?). From therevival of the 80’s trendto the brief return oflow-rise denim, it’s hard to avoid the latest trends and fashion-trys when your backyard is essentially a runway. After nearly a decade in New York, I’ve accumulated quite the wardrobe.
I’ve inherently become a New Yorker. I like my coffee black, I am in a constant rush for literally no reason, I can hail a cab with my eyes closed, and my wardrobe consists of a plethora of dark neutrals. Somewhere between 2010 and now, I’ve grown fond of a select few, tried and true pieces in my closet. The kind of wardrobe staples that areworth investing inbecause season after season, they have withstood the test of time. There’s a common saying: you aren’t a true New Yorker until you’ve lived here for 10 years. Well, I counter and say you aren’t atrueNew Yorker until you have a variation of these six fashion items in your wardrobe.
A Timeless Trench
From the first spring rain to the final winter storm, a trench coat is a season-less classic. Layer with a hoodie or a chunky knit this winter to brace the colder temps. A marriage of two brands I adore. Polish your look with a belted trench. Elevate this basic piece with a plaid print. Effortlessly easy, need I say more?
A Wool Knit Turtleneck
Invest in a classic wool turtleneck sweater this season (if you haven't already). Opt for a slightly oversized knit to layer over your favorite fall dresses or half-tuck into a pair of trousers.Transition your spring wardrobe into fall by layering this sweater over them. This is my fall uniform. Why not expand into neutrals?I wore this almost every day last winter.
A Structured Bag
Structured lady bags have proven to be an evergreen handbag shape. From super affordable to an investment piece, the options are limitless. For this price? It's a no brainer. Angular, yet feminine. Move over white boot, it's all about the white bag.Ready to invest into the trend?
A Statement Sleeve Blouse
A not-so-basic basic blouse, if you will. It's the perfect solution when you are indecisive about what to wear, but already have on your favorite trouser and shoe. The silhouette always enhances and polishes my looks.I am obsessed with this brand. I've worn this blouse maybe 100 times, so worth it. Convinced I now need another mock neck blouse...Everything about this is a yes for me. Your new go-to holiday party blouse.
High-Rise Straight-Leg Denim
Think denim trouser. Elevate your denim look by opting for a high to mid-rise straight leg jean. Pair with a bootie, sneaker, kitten heel or flat - this style goes with just about everything you already own. I have become the ultimate AGOLDE stan. These jeans confirm clothing can boost your mood. Simple, yet polished. If these came in every wash, I'd buy them. A New Yorker's favorite, Khaite is the latest brand we're all obsessing over. From top-to-toe, this look is perfect winter wardrobe inspiration.
A Commuter Loafer
Let's be real, heels are great and a New York staple, but you're not a real New Yorker until you've come to terms with the commuter flat. I've relied heavily on a loafer to get me from point a to b, while still being in style.Jack Erwin recently launched women's shoes. Thank you.Everyone needs a leather loafer. Slides, but make it a loafer. The name of this loafer says it all. Up Next: I Think I'm Having a Style Regression Because I Suddenly Like These 4 Pieces
