As a bride on your wedding day, all eyes are going to be on you, and this fact alone can bring a lot of pressure to look absolutely flawless. If you treat this as a quest for perfection in every aspect, it could get quite stressful, so the ideal solution is to liberate yourself from all the worries by allowing yourself to just be you. It’s not about gunning for the most gorgeous dress, statement jewellery, trending makeup and detailed hairstyles at the same time, but instead about making sure that each aspect of your look reflects your personality, however minimal or maximal that may be. When it comes to your bridal hairstyles specifically, the key points to keep in mind are quite simple: it should suit your face shape; last throughout the event; and be able to support your outfit in case you have a dupatta or veil. For instance, the breezy silhouette of sheer, easy fabrics at a beach wedding should be complemented by free-flowing, softly tonged tresses that are pinned up with a few sprigs of tiny flowers. Whatever is your vision, make sure your bridal hairstyle reflects just that. Here, we put together a complete guide of all the ‘mane’ points to keep in mind to help you nail your bridal hairstyle.
Why do you need to choose your bridal hairstyle before your big day?
One of the most important things a bride needs to do is search for makeup artists and hairstylists that are most in sync with what she wants for her big day. Does she elegantly want to turn heads, or does she want to announce her entry with a statement look? Does she want to go traditional and take inspiration from Indian royal princesses, or is there something more contemporary on her mind? The individual style of the hairstylist should be in tandem to the bride’s expectations.
Bollywood celebrity hairstylist Aasif Ahmed believes that hair and makeup artists should be booked as soon as your wedding date is fixed. “These days, a lot of brides want contemporary styles and that’s why instead of salon stylists, [they] want to book artists who work on films and editorials. To ensure that you get a stylist of your choice, you need to block him/her as soon as possible.” Once he is booked for a wedding, Ahmed schedules a personalised consultation with the bride to avoid last-minute horrors. He examines the hair texture, the face structure and goes through the outfits (or images of outfits) that the bride has in mind. “Most [of them] want their makeup [to be done] in such a way that the skin appears naturally dewy and peachy, so we opt for natural but pretty looking hairstyles. The hair has to be a part of the bridal story.”
Popular Indian bridal hairstyles
In the initial consultation, Ahmed, like most modern hairstylists, discusses the wedding themes and destinations, so that the hairstyles can imbibe the overall vibe. If the theme is Bollywood, for example, there is a license to go full glam with stylised bouncy curls. The location also determines the style. For instance, for a sangeet with a beach venue, he ditched the traditional Indian updo and gave the bride a Grecian diva touch with windswept textured tresses, pinned delicately with orchid flowers. “I never recommend the hair totally down for a beachy wedding/function, as the humidity plays up in time, and the hair starts getting frizzy. So, half open, slightly twisted and teased styles work great,” he explains.
When it comes to Indian weddings, the most common style is to centre part the hair and pull the mane into an updo. Whether it is a nikah or a Hindu ceremony, most Indian cultures usually have the bride’s head covered (if only for part of the time) with a delicate veil. The draping of the dupatta also makes one stand out as the bride. “I always recommend that the bride wears a maang tikka—something not overtly heavy that gives her a headache, but an heirloom piece that keeps her rooted to traditions while making her look stunning. How many occasions apart from a wedding give you a chance to adorn your head with a maang tikka, anyway?” advises Ahmed.
When it comes to accessories, you can either pick real jewels or embrace the simplicity of flowers. Flowers can be used to give height or volume to the entire look, like Anushka Sharma did for her bridal hairstyle. Hairstylist Georgiou Gabriel opted for a bun that rested right on the nape of her neck, and highlighted the hairdo with fresh hydrangeas in two tones of pink. Since then, hairstylists are browsing Pinterest for floral inspirations as Indian hairstyles are no longer limited to just roses and jasmines. And if you do select roses, just regular red or pink won’t always do. If you order in advance, you can zero down on the right size and colour of your florals, which can do wonders to transform your hairstyle and make it wedding-ready. The thumb rule is to think global while staying rooted in Indian traditions. A textured Grecian braid, highlighted with tiny jasmine flowers instead of a thick gajra, works well for minimalist brides.
How to pick a bridal hairstyle for your face shape
For a bride, the most important factor when picking a hairstyle is if brings out her best features, not just the current trends. That’s where bridal hairstyles are different from editorial fashion shoots. The hair is not the leading player here, but a prop to make the bride look more alluring. Michel Baltazar, creative director, Jean-Claude Biguine Spa and Salon, shares some essential points to note.
Bridal hairstyles for round faces
The key with round faces is to pick a bridal hairstyle that makes the face look elongated. So adding any volume horizontally will not work. Avoid centre partings and opt for a side parting, or don’t do it at all. These are the faces that need sweetness and romance with soft movement, and the right balance of vertical volume.
Bridal hairstyles for long faces
The common mistake with this type of face is going for a bridal hairstyle with high updos, which tend to lengthen the face more. It is especially important to avoid creating height. Opt for flat volumes instead—a low bun, or romantic, wavy hair that amps up the volume around the nape of the neck.
Bridal hairstyles for oval faces
The best part of having an oval face is that you have a wide range of hairstyles to choose from. The bride’s height also plays a part here. If she is on the shorter side, she can pull off volume on top of the head with ease.
Bridal hairstyles for square faces
Brides with a square face should avoid geometric shapes and very structured hairstyles. The sharp lines of the face must be softened with buns, or by way of a soft side bang, or with some wavy strands cascading at the sides. If you need to add volume, go for elements that have rounded edges, like waves or buns.
How to pick wedding hairstyles for short hair
“I like the idea of short hair for a wedding. Original and well accessorised, short hair can be ultra-feminine. With a little length to express, you can work magic on short hair,” states Baltazar, whose has the characteristic ability to seamlessly blend nuances of elegant French hairstyling with Indian sensibilities for his bridal styles. Instead of struggling with extensions, you can choose to celebrate your hair’s natural movement as well. One of the best options is to play with the colour of your hair, and choose one that contrasts well enough to balance the hue of your wedding dress. Delicate details on short hair, such as small accessories and fine headbands, look very feminine as well. To complement an Indian wedding attire, include some dainty traditional flowers or delicate hair jewels.
Bridal hairstyles based on your hair texture
Ahmed advises his brides to avoid colour or any form of chemical treatments six months prior to the wedding, as he doesn’t want the hair to be under any duress. “In fact, the brides are advised to rest and eat well because whatever said and done, wedding stress is unavoidable and it does show up on the skin and hair. I recommend that brides go for head massages and hair spas to improve the texture and health of their natural tresses,” states Ahmed. If you are leaving your hair in the care of a professional hairstylist, you don’t need to worry about texture as much. For Baltazar, hair texture is a small detail, because it doesn’t exactly restrict the stylist in any manner. “We can achieve all kinds of textures, so it’s better to not base the bridal hairstyle on your own. Focus more on what best complements your face type, and how that can be adapted to highlight the overall look.”
