15 Must-Have Gifts For the Sala Season Fashionista

Sala season — or living-room season — refers to the few months at the end of the year when Latines and their loved ones dress to the nines in new holiday-ready outfits and gather in their living rooms to take photos of one another. These images are usually immediately shared to family photo albums, abuelas' Facebook profiles, and countless family WhatsApp group chats. In my experience, we take our several hundred family photos and then immediately go eat a painstakingly prepped delicious holiday dinner of empanadas, congri, tamales, and spit-roasted pig.

While everyone's holiday menu looks a little different depending on where your family is from, sala season generally lasts from early November to mid-January. This is a time when many of us join our parents and extended families back home to revel in the holiday cheer around Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, the new year, and other holidays. While sala season isn't a uniquely Latine tradition, many of us who identify as such will remember gathering with our tíos, primos, and abuelos around this time to stage photo shoot after photo shoot during holiday parties as kids. Of course, we also always loved the gifts associated with the holidays and gathering with family members, too.
