We’ve all been to the beauty store, picked up a shampoo that claims it is ‘perfect for your hair type’ and bought it, only to be left with the same old mane, no gloss or glory. Haircare is hardly a one size fits all—in fact, it’s probably even harder to figure out than skincare. So what’s the next best way to decode what really works? Word of mouth, which does come with a lot of trial and error. We got seven Vogue editors to talk about the one haircare product that changed their lives, and also give you a detailed description of their hair type and any treatments they have gotten in the past, so you can decide whether the product will work for you or not yourself. Meet our tried-and-tested hair hall of fame.
Priya Tanna, editor-in-chief
Hair type
Thick and wavy.
Hair treatments
A protein treatment once a month post colour.
Favourite haircare products
Olaplex Shampoo and Conditioner—they give you a great wash without stripping your hair of its moisture.
Sneha Mankani, junior beauty editor
Hair type
Thick, dry-ish due to regular colouring, but also healthy.
Hair treatments
Bleached it and coloured it multiple times.
Favourite haircare products
Because I have treated hair, I use a hair mask instead of conditioner, and the one that really nourishes my hair is the Kiehl’s Sunflower Color Preserving Deep Recovery Pak. It deeply nourishes my mane and has got such loving ingredients—like sunflower and apricot oils, a blend of Vitamins B3, B5, and B6 and a UV-protective filter—that it’s really a game changer for anyone with coloured hair.
Priyanka Parkash, fashion coordinator and stylist
Hair type
Oily roots and dry hair.
Hair treatments
I have severely dry hair because of all the years of colouring and heat, so I do the Olaplex treatment, but I’m not very consistent with it.
Favourite haircare products
By far the best product I’ve used on my hair is the Morrocanoil Smoothing Lotion. It’s cream-based, but isn’t oily or sticky—and it smells amazing! It’s also the perfect amount of hydration for dry hair. I’ve used a lot of leave-in conditioners that are oil-based and they’ve always left my hair flat. This cream is weightless and maintains the hair’s natural volume.
Rujuta Vaidya, fashion and e-commerce editor – Vogue.in
Hair type
Curly and coloured.
Hair treatments
Just colouring and the occasional hair spa.
Favourite haircare products
If you have curly hair and live in a city that’s high on humidity, there’s no such thing as one hero product that saves the day. Post hair colouring, I have committed to Olaplex No 3, the at-home treatment, once a week. If I have no time for the lengthy process, I swear by the Organix Kukui Nut Oil Conditioner, which de-frizzes my hair. L’Oréal Mythic Oil is a permanent favourite—the formula is not too heavy and it tames the unruliest flyaways.
Divya Jagwani, fashion bookings editor
Hair type
Dry, wavy and thick. Please know my hair is only amazing when blow-dried, otherwise it’s matted and very dry.
Hair treatments
Hair colour and permanent straightening.
Favourite haircare products
The Wella Professionals SP LuxeOil Keratin Restore Mask gives me instant shine and smooth hair when used regularly. I also do an apple cider rinse, and use an egg yolk and olive oil hair mask every one or two months.
Shalini Shah, copy chief
Hair type
Curly, dry, medium-length.
Hair treatments
My face and scalp tend to react badly to deep-conditioning treatments, leave-in serums, etc, which is the reason why, despite the fact that they might be great for my hair per se, they don’t work for me. I’ve coloured my hair once (highlights) a few years ago and that’s about it. Nothing drastic.
Favourite haircare products
I’ve recently discovered the benefits of argan oil (the fragrance-free, pure version), which I apply to the ends of my hair to prevent frizz, since I shampoo my hair every day. Among shampoos, the Sebastian Professional Twisted Curl Shampoo is great for my curls, as is the Yves Rocher Low Shampoo – Delicate Cleansing Cream, which is great if you want the cleansing without the drying.
Raveena Shahpuri, digital writer
Hair type
Thick and dry, with rough ends and an oily scalp.
Hair treatments
When it comes to my locks, I don’t like to experiment much. So no, I haven’t got any treatments done. In fact, I’ve never even coloured my hair till now, but I’m beginning to consider it.
Favourite haircare products
I recently started using the Kérastase Resistance Bain Extentioniste Shampoo, and I feel like it’s definitely improved the overall quality of my locks. The fact that it’s made specially for long hair helps keep my mane healthy from root to tip, which is great.
